Something I remember reading back in Writing Fiction by Janet Burroway (another great book you should pick up) was that inspiration for writing, can come in all ways, shapes, and forms. Sometimes the inspiration happens right when you wake up in the morning, after a long walk, or even 12:16AM in the morning typing a blog prompt and eating Reese’s Puffs cereal. Sometimes it’s sporadic, other times it’s consistent. The point is, it’s different for everyone so there is no right or wrong answer to the question: “How do you get inspired to write?”
But… now what? I’ve picked up the pen and I want to write!… But write what? Jumping off from our last blog from Writing True by Perl and Schwartz, this blog post is about freewriting. Perl and Schwartz give a ton of ideas when it comes to writing just something. My direction for the class I’m in has me using three of the eight guides/prompts for getting started. I’m also directed to do one each day for the next three days: Today, tomorrow, and Sunday. I hope these prompts can get those creative juices flowing!!!
Blog Day 1 Prompt: Springboard Line
“Pick a line from something you are reading- a novel, textbook, a newspaper or magazine, even an ad – and copy it out. Skip a space and start writing. No need to explain why you picked it. Let the associations come as they may and don’t feel a need to stay on topic” – (Writing True the Art and Craft of Creative Nonfiction by Perl and Schwartz, p.30).
- “Rocks in my path? I keep them all. With them I shall build my castle.” – Nemo Nox
And from that castle, a dynasty that is ever lasting shall spring from it’s solid foundation. Even as you reduce us to rubble, rubble is simply a brand new canvas for us to rise again. And once we rise again, the broken record plays again: No matter how small the stone, and how tall the building may fall from it’s raze, like a Phoenix, we will rise from the ashes (Ash is rock too you know). What was a simple book about a Catch-22, is now the reality you live in…
You in my path? I keep you all. With all of you I shall rebuild my universe.
